The full story
Tzar: The Burden of the Crown is a 2000 real-time strategy game. This remake rewrites it from scratch in Rust with the Bevy engine, working from a disassembly of the original executable.
Claude Code read the disassembly and ported one system at a time: combat, AI, the map generator and mission scripts. The maker played the remake next to the original and reported anything that felt wrong, and Claude traced each difference back to the original code. More than 600 tests and notes kept between sessions stopped long stretches of work drifting.
The result, ReTzar, plays the original campaigns and random maps on Windows 10 and 11 at up to 4K. It is free and open source but needs a copy of the original game for its data.
