A focus-stacking app built to photograph a mineral collection
An experienced macro photographer used Claude to build their own focus-stacking software to replace two commercial apps while cataloguing a mineral collection.
The full story
After years in boxes, the maker's mineral collection was finally unpacked and they wanted to photograph and catalogue all of it. Close-up photos have a tiny depth of field, so macro photographers use focus stacking: many shots at slightly different focus distances combined into one sharp image.
The maker owned two commercial focus-stacking applications but found them painful to use, so they set out to build something better with Claude. They say it "was actually really hard" and not a weekend job, but that they are very happy with the results.
