A Home Assistant app that clones HA OS to a USB drive

Rather than reflash an SD card by hand, a user spent a week building with Claude an app that backs up, flashes and restores Home Assistant onto a USB device.

The full story

Upgrading a Home Assistant SD card normally means backing up, flashing a new card from a PC and restoring. Rather than spend an hour doing that, the maker says he "wasted a week" writing an app with Claude to do it automatically.

You plug a USB device into the Home Assistant machine and click clone: the app makes a backup, downloads the right HA OS image for the board, flashes it and injects the backup, showing progress as it goes. Booting from the new device brings back the config, automations, accounts and database.

What this is. Real projects where people used Claude to build, fix, port, revive or take apart something, from jailbroken Kindles to rebuilt DOS games, plus the times it went badly wrong. Every build links to where it was shared, and every source is listed here.

How far to trust it. We summarise what people reported and say what each build rests on: a full write-up with code, a short post, or a passing comment. We haven't tested them ourselves. Photos are shown from the original sources with credit. Only modify hardware you own, and back up first.

Privacy. No accounts. Analytics cookies (Google Analytics) only if you accept them; no ads or cross-site tracking. Searches are counted anonymously (just the words) to show what's popular, and so are clicks on Ask Claude (just the count).
