The full story
Yoto players are popular children's audio players, but Yoto no longer supports the Gen 2 model. The author had two lying around, and loves Audiobookshelf, a self-hosted audiobook server. Their custom firmware, yotwo, turns a Gen 2 Yoto into an Audiobookshelf player, so it keeps working and gives more control as the kids get older.
