Image: reddit.com · Used Claude Code to build a Roland SC-55 emulator front-end so old MIDI files sound like they did in 1994

Worked Proof shown

A MIDI file player built around the Roland SC-55 emulator

A JUCE standalone app wraps the Nuked-SC55 emulator with a MIDI file player and live MIDI input, so old game music plays as on the original synth.

The full story

Nuked-SC55 is a cycle-accurate emulation of the Roland SC-55, the synth many classic DOS game soundtracks were written for. It lacked an easy way to open a MIDI file and press play, so the poster had Claude build a JUCE standalone app around the emulator core, using a maintained fork.

The app has a MIDI file player, live MIDI input and settings that survive a restart. It runs the emulator at the real hardware sample rate and resamples, uses three threads linked by lock-free queues, and has a deliberately lenient MIDI parser for old files full of junk bytes. Users must supply their own Roland ROM dumps.

What this is. Real projects where people used Claude to build, fix, port, revive or take apart something, from jailbroken Kindles to rebuilt DOS games, plus the times it went badly wrong. Every build links to where it was shared, and every source is listed here.

How far to trust it. We summarise what people reported and say what each build rests on: a full write-up with code, a short post, or a passing comment. We haven't tested them ourselves. Photos are shown from the original sources with credit. Only modify hardware you own, and back up first.

Privacy. No accounts. Analytics cookies (Google Analytics) only if you accept them; no ads or cross-site tracking. Searches are counted anonymously (just the words) to show what's popular, and so are clicks on Ask Claude (just the count).
