The full story
As a weekend project the maker investigated the original Nokia 3310 firmware with Ghidra, decompiled it into understandable C, then ported it to TypeScript. Claude on Max helped with vectorising the phone's hull, and the result includes the screen's distinctive pixel fade, keypad locking, a backlight and a vibration effect using WebAudio.
The revived phone uses the maker's own server as a fake carrier, so devices can send and receive "SMS" using a number tied to a private id. The maker is now looking through other firmwares to port games such as Snake.
