The full story
A physicist tested how far AI could take a piece of new physics research, the kind a smart undergraduate might do with an advisor, using Claude deep research and Claude Code. A literature review of over 50 papers took two days, and a complete rewrite of the simulation code in JAX took two weeks, against six months for the original. The rewrite was validated against known benchmarks.
Claude wrote about 90% of the code, while the physicist supplied physics intuition, caught subtle errors and designed validation tests. At the time of posting the actual physics runs had not yet been done.
