A Samsung ViewFinity S8 monitor's firmware patched to kill a wake-up banner

A new Samsung ViewFinity S8 showed a pop-up banner on every wake that couldn't be turned off. Instead of returning it, the owner had Claude decompile and fix the firmware; it took several tries, none of which bricked the monitor.

The full story

A brand-new Samsung ViewFinity S8 monitor showed a pop-up banner every time it woke, with no setting to turn it off. Rather than send it back, the owner had Claude decompile the monitor's firmware and patch the banner out.

It took several attempts, none of which bricked the monitor. The owner accepts the warranty is probably void.

What this is. Real projects where people used Claude to build, fix, port, revive or take apart something, from jailbroken Kindles to rebuilt DOS games, plus the times it went badly wrong. Every build links to where it was shared, and every source is listed here.

How far to trust it. We summarise what people reported and say what each build rests on: a full write-up with code, a short post, or a passing comment. We haven't tested them ourselves. Photos are shown from the original sources with credit. Only modify hardware you own, and back up first.
