Building Spinlings with Claude

A game build log covering shared rules between platforms and a desktop UI trap.

The full story

Spinlings is a free, open-source creature game that runs inside Claude Code: pixel creatures battle above the prompt while Claude works, and players collect a three-creature team, trade cards and duel other players' saved teams. The original game was built with Claude, with Codex helping on later interface and testing work.

Creature generation and battle rules live in one TypeScript engine shared by offline play and the online server, which runs on a Cloudflare Worker with D1 storing collections, trades and duels. Battles use saved teams, so players don't need to be online at the same time.

A desktop bug where a card's text opened its details but its artwork didn't took more fixing than any new feature. The game makes no AI calls and doesn't read prompts, replies or project files; online play sends only game actions and a coarse model family.

What this is. Real projects where people used Claude to build, fix, port, revive or take apart something, from jailbroken Kindles to rebuilt DOS games, plus the times it went badly wrong. Every build links to where it was shared, and every source is listed here.

How far to trust it. We summarise what people reported and say what each build rests on: a full write-up with code, a short post, or a passing comment. We haven't tested them ourselves. Photos are shown from the original sources with credit. Only modify hardware you own, and back up first.

Privacy. No accounts. Analytics cookies (Google Analytics) only if you accept them; no ads or cross-site tracking. Searches are counted anonymously (just the words) to show what's popular, and so are clicks on Ask Claude (just the count).
