The full story
macOS lowers media volume on AirPods when a call is active, which stopped the poster watching videos with their long-distance fiancee while on a call. They made CallLane, a simple macOS app that routes audio through itself so both call and media volume sound good.
It also forces macOS to use the MacBook's own microphones by default, which the poster says gives better call audio.
