Jailbreaking a Kindle and removing Amazon bloat

Reported as: plug the Kindle into a computer over USB, let Claude Code run the public KindleModding procedure, strip Amazon software, and add Tailscale for remote access. A post on an agent-assisted modding project says the agent executed a procedure written by others and did not devise an exploit.

The full story

In October 2026 an X user described plugging a 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite into a computer over USB and letting Claude Code jailbreak it. The agent followed the public instructions from the KindleModding community wiki rather than inventing an exploit. It then removed the Amazon software the owner didn't want and installed Tailscale, so the Kindle could be reached securely from anywhere.

A related public guide (Mounstroya/kindle-ssh-guide) goes further and runs Claude Code on the jailbroken Kindle itself. It is reached over SSH, with Tailscale giving it a private network address and no open public port. Jailbreak methods depend on the firmware version, which is why the wiki is the place to check first.

Worth knowing

The main account comes from a social media post and is repeated across aggregator reposts. The firmware version and session logs are not published, so it cannot be reproduced. A MobileRead forum user reported a bricked Kindle after following AI instructions.

What this is. Real projects where people used Claude to build, fix, port, revive or take apart something, from jailbroken Kindles to rebuilt DOS games, plus the times it went badly wrong. Every build links to where it was shared, and every source is listed here.

How far to trust it. We summarise what people reported and say what each build rests on: a full write-up with code, a short post, or a passing comment. We haven't tested them ourselves. Photos are shown from the original sources with credit. Only modify hardware you own, and back up first.
