The full story

openTPU is an open-source AI accelerator the poster started to learn about accelerator design, developed with AI coding agents including Claude Code. It already runs Qwen3.5 and other open-weight models on a Kintex-7 FPGA card.

One agent reads the hardware code, timing reports and notes from earlier attempts and proposes a change, another implements it, and automated checks compare the hardware with a Python simulator and measure performance. The poster still has to nudge larger architectural changes, and verification had blind spots: floating-point bugs that the inference tests missed. The repo holds the hardware, instruction set, simulator, compiler, profiler and host tools, and can be run in the simulator without an FPGA.

What this is. Real projects where people used Claude to build, fix, port, revive or take apart something, from jailbroken Kindles to rebuilt DOS games, plus the times it went badly wrong. Every build links to where it was shared, and every source is listed here.

How far to trust it. We summarise what people reported and say what each build rests on: a full write-up with code, a short post, or a passing comment. We haven't tested them ourselves. Photos are shown from the original sources with credit. Only modify hardware you own, and back up first.

Searches are counted anonymously (just the words) to show what's popular, and so are clicks on Ask Claude (just the count). The Claude connector only receives the search words your Claude sends it.
