The full story
Paint.NET has never run under Wine because it depends on Direct2D, which Wine has struggled to support. In Bluesky posts quoted on Hacker News (the originals were later deleted), the author described a different route: reimplementing Direct2D inside Paint.NET itself through clean-room reverse engineering, done with Claude Code.
The author says it is buggy and slow, and gives no date for when it might be good enough. They also wrote that Claude made more progress in three weeks than in the 12 years since Paint.NET began using Direct2D in 2014.
