Debugging a printer driver byte by byte
A write-up describes a Claude Code project that fixed a printer HP never supported. It diffed raw output until a silent DPI mismatch turned up.
The full story
This is a closer look at the HP Laser 1008a macOS driver session, based on the published four-hour Claude Code transcript. Claude first found that macOS's printing system (CUPS) recognised the printer but had no suitable driver. A generic PCL driver hung at "connecting to device", the classic sign of a host-based printer waiting for its own SPL data.
Claude then built a driver that produces that data and compared its output, byte by byte, with what the official drivers send. The decisive bug was a silent resolution (DPI) mismatch that only showed up in the raw bytes. The end result is an MIT-licensed one-command installer on GitHub.
